More Cupertino groups appear to have formed to move the public, city and property owners back to the negotiating table to address the ongoing conundrum of Vallco Shopping Mall. The debate over this property has been going on far too long, from the battle over Measures D and E over 10 years ago to the intense fight over Measures C and D this election cycle.
For decades, our community has been incapable of harmoniously resolving the future of this site.
Property developers from Westfield to the current Owner continue to be frustrated by community groups (presently by the anonymous Better Cupertino and its affiliates) who are stuck on a vision that is not financially feasible.
Ask yourself, as a developer of malls and other large properties, would you touch Vallco with its community track record?
This is a list of the community groups both pro and con that I am aware of: Better Cupertino, including its two PACs, United Cupertino (newest group formed), Cupertino Majority, Cupertino Forward, Cupertino Life, Cupertino Against Re-Zoning (CARe), Support Better Cupertino, a number of union-based community organizations, and various smaller neighborhood groups.
It should be clear to everyone that this city is crying out for conflict resolution. Here’s my recommendation: The Fremont Union High School District recently resolved a community dispute over Lynbrook High School’s attendance zone and falling enrollment using a citizen’s advisory committee, facilitated by Minh Le of the Wilfred Jarvis Institute. The city should examine and consider this approach for immediate implementation at Vallco.
