“I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low income housing built in your neighborhood,” Donald Trump.
Steven Scharf and Kitty Moore have spent the better part of their young political careers obstructing all housing projects that have been brought forth to the City of Cupertino. From a boutique re-imagination of the Scandinavia Furniture store into residential to the various housing proposals for "The Oaks" or to their penultimate signature white whale, Vallco.
On social media, they proclaim vehmently that affordable housing will destroy your “quality of life”, bring “vagrants”, "undesirables", significantly increase crime to our streets, and ultimately destroy your property values. Ms. Moore even went so far as to insinuate on social media that affordable housing would increase prostitution or lead to predatory behavior by Apple employees on Cupertino High School girls.
It is utterly inconceivable that these members of the Planning Commission and the City Council would be party to sue the City of Cupertino, the City for which they serve, but that’s exactly what they did. They cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees in their repeated and utterly failed lawsuits.
In fact, Ms. Moore’s years-long litigation against the City of Cupertino over Vallco was thrown out by the Santa Clara Supreme Court with “prejudice”, leaving her liable for all legal bills.
On Ms. Moore’s website, she claims to be “someone who knows what she is doing…” but in the 62-page ruling, Judge Helen Williams said [Ms. Moore] multiple times misinterpreted the law and made convoluted arguments that “didn’t hold water”.
“By cherry-picking data points to dispute and advancing different calculations without a clear and legally-sound methodology…” Judge Williams wrote.
Mr. Scharf and Ms. Moore are through and through NIMBYs and they have no intention of looking to a sustainable, collaborative, and prosperous future of our City. Just like Trump, they use litigation, hyperbole, and social media division to create fissures in our community that accomplish their openly stated goal – “to build a wall around Cupertino and make San Jose pay for it”.
We deserve better leadership at our City Council. Leadership that seeks compromise and common ground, not division and disrespect. Leadership that doesn’t demonize members of the community, rather looks to be inclusive of all.
We’ve seen that leadership expressed by Hung Wei and JR Fruen in stark contrast to the openly divisive tactics of this small group, “Better Cupertino” and "Friends of Better Cupertino" PACS for which Mr. Scharf and Ms. Moore are 100% beholden.
We know that with the time that has passed, residents have come to understand this fringe group's agenda and have reached the same conclusion - they are wrong for our City and wrong for our Future.
